4 Brilliant Tips for Dealing With Angry Customers
4 Brilliant Tips for Dealing With Angry Customers A couple years back, I worked as a customer service representative for a tech company. I enjoyed the work â" talking to customers, helping them sort out any issues they were having with the companyâs products. I understood the products well and loved hearing the delight in customerâs voices after their problem was resolved. I considered myself good at handling people, until I had my first experience with an irate customer.Sure, most of the people who call customer support are usually unsatisfied about something. But most of them are usually calm and logical, looking for a solution rather than someone to berate. Not this customer. He started yelling angrily the moment I picked up the call. He went on and on about how our products were useless, how the whole company was a joke and how stupid the customer support (me) was. This got to me and I felt the urge to shout back at him. However, I knew the call was being recorded. Yelling back at him would put my job in jeopardy, therefore I s imply let him yell until he ran out of steam and hung up.If you work in a customer-facing role, it is inevitable that you will have to deal with an angry customer, if you havenât already. The incidents will not be so many, but they will certainly be there. For every single customer who complains about your product or service, there are 26 other customers who donât voice their concerns, opting instead to take their business elsewhere.Customers might get angry for a variety of reasons, some justified and some not â" your products or services did not meet their expectations, they had incorrect assumptions that led to wrong expectations, the problem occurred at an inconvenient time, you name it.If you want to be successful in business, you have to know how to deal with disgruntled customers, because they will always be there.Whether you are dealing with the customer on phone or whether the angry customer is physically present, these situations are usually filled with stress and unpr edictability that can easily result in disaster for your company. You need to know how to deal with such situations tactfully in a way that minimizes the chances of a damaging outcome for your business.Being prepared and knowing ahead of time what to do in such situations is the key to reaching outcomes with the least damage to your business. Below are four brilliant tips for dealing with angry customers.USE THE CUSTOMERâS NAME The first thing you should do when faced with an angry customer is to find out their name and use it to address the customer. This might sound odd. What does a name have to do with an angry customer?A personâs name is a very important thing to him or her. It forms a major part of their identity, of who they are.According to Dale Carnegie, a famous American author,âA personâs name is to him or her the sweetest and most important sound in any language.â According to this research, hearing our name makes our brains ecstatic and causes some parts of the b rain to light up. Note that this only happens when we hear our own name, not any other name. This shows how important a personâs name is.By finding out and using the customerâs name, you are creating a great connection to their individuality and identity. You are humanizing the interaction between the two of you. Instead of the tricky situation being an interaction being between the company and a faceless customer, you turn it into a conversation between two people. It shows that your care about the customer, that you respect that and recognize that they have a problem, which you are willing to find a solution to. This makes the customer feel important and plays a huge role in calming them down. Therefore, whenever you encounter an angry customer, start by asking for their name and then use it when addressing him or her. Below is an example of how staff in customer-facing roles typically address complaining customers:âIâm sorry for that sir! Let me see what I can do.ââWhat can I do to help maâam?ââI can see why you are upset.âNow, compare the above responses with the following statements:âIâm sorry for that, Dave! Let me see what I can do.ââWhat can I do to help, Chloe?ââI can see why you are upset, Kelvin.âThe responses with the customerâs name sound a lot less formal and much more sincere than the responses where the customer is simply addressed as sir or madam. This makes the customer feel like you actually understand their frustrations and that you are more invested in helping him or her solve their issue.REMAIN CALMWhen you find yourself in an interaction with an angry person, with their anger directed at you, your brainâs first instinct is to get you into fight or flight mode. Your first urge is to either defend yourself or attack the person.Resist any temptations to get into a vehement verbal sparring match with the customer. Doing so is both inefficient and ineffective â" it wonât get you anywhere.Actually, getting into a shouting match with the customer cannot lead to any positive outcome for you or the business. It does not matter if you make better points in the argument or if you yell louder than the angry customer. You will only succeed in making the customer angrier, which is the last thing you want to do. If you want to calm the customer down and have a meaningful conversation, you have to remain calm yourself. Without remaining calm, it will be impossible for you to find out what their problem is.Regardless of what the customer says to you, try not to get angry. Donât let your ego get the better of you. Remain calm and professional and avoid yelling back at them or adopting an angry tone.Sure, dealing with the angry customer might be frustrating, but you donât want to give this impression to the customer.Even if you are not yelling, you do not want the customer to think that you are disdained by their complaints, since this will only make them angrier and thwart any chances of mean ingful communication.Maintain a neutral expression as you engage with the customer and calmly show that you are interested in finding out more about their problem and finding a solution for it.If you find it hard maintaining your calm, take deep, calm breaths until you start calming down.Donât make the breathing obvious to the customer, since it might come across as creepy. By displaying a calm and professional demeanor, the customer might be unconsciously compelled to mirror your attitude, thereby effectively calming him down. If the customer is shouting, a good idea is to ask him to speak slower.According to a study published in the Science Daily, a loud voice is usually accompanied by faster speech. By asking the customer to slow down his speech, he will automatically and subconsciously lower his voice and become calmer. Request the customer to speak slower as many times as necessary until he starts calming down.Another great tactic for remaining calm and calming down a custome r is to ask questions. Instead of trying to show them why they are wrong, ask questions that require them to focus on the facts.Ask how they would like you to assist or seek clarification for some details in their story. Most times, the customerâs anger is a result of the emotional response associated with the inconvenience caused by your products or services.By asking factual questions, you shift the client from the emotional aspect of their complaint to a more objective view that is focused on finding a solution rather than complaining. You should also learn not to take things personally when dealing with an angry customer. Keep in mind that the customer is not angry with you. They are angry because they are dissatisfied with a certain aspect of your products or services. In their anger, the client might not be keen about their choice of language, which means that a lot of their displeasure might be directed at you.Even if they are addressing you, you have to remind yourself that they are actually talking about the company and not you as an individual. Keeping this in mind will make it easier for you to remain calm in such a situation.Another thing you should avoid here is trying to place the blame on the customer. There are many situations where customers will angrily complain about something that is entirely their fault. However, placing the blame on an angry customer will only make him more irate and will push him away from your company. He might actually turn into a crusader against your business.A research by Esteban Kolsky shows that 13% of unhappy customers will share their bad experience with 15 or more people. This is not good for your business. If you think the problem is their fault, calmly explain the companyâs policy for dealing with such issues without directly putting the blame on the customer.APOLOGIZE TO THE CUSTOMERThere are several reasons why a customer might be angry. In some cases, the reason behind the customerâs anger will be your (the companyâs) fault. For instance, their delivery might have been bungled, they might have received a product that is not working, your service might have crashed at a crucial moment, a member of staff might have treated them badly, and so on.In other cases, the customerâs anger might be due to reasons outside the companyâs control. Probably the customer dropped their product in water or did something else that damaged the product, they might not have followed the manual, they had wrong expectations of the product, or maybe the customer is just having a bad day and is complaining about a non-issue.If the fault is not something under your control, you might be tempted to tell the customer that it was not your fault. Regardless of the reason behind the customerâs anger, you need to apologize to the customer.Apologize for something that is not your fault? You might be wondering why on earth you would do that. Well, hereâs the thing. If you in a customer facing role, you are the face of the company. You are its ears, its eyes and its mouth. To the angry customer, you are the company, and they believe that the company has wronged them. Therefore, regardless of whether you were involved in whatever angered the customer or not, you need to apologize to the customer on behalf of the company. When giving an apology, you need to watch out for the kind of language you use. If the customerâs concern is the fault of the company, you should apologize and take responsibility for your (the companyâs) mistake. For example, if a customer is complaining because an order was sent to the wrong address, you could say, âIâm sorry that the order was sent to the wrong address. It must have been a mistake on the part of our dispatch team. Let me see what we can do to make up for the inconvenience.â Note that in this apology, you are accepting the blame for the mistake. On the other hand, if you determine that the customerâs concern is not the companyâs fault, you s hould issue an apology for the situation the customer is going through while being careful not to accept the blame. For example, if the customer bought a computer from you but then dropped it, causing it to stop working, this is clearly not the companyâs fault. In such a situation, you should apologize for what they are going through and then calmly explain the companyâs policy for dealing with such issues, again without directly putting the blame on the customer. For instance, you might say,âIâm sorry about the fact that your computer is not working. I understand that this is a great inconvenience for you. However, our warranty only covers manufacturer defects.âNote that this apology does not assume responsibility for the customerâs concern. Why is apologizing important? Many times, angry customers are not looking for a refund or a special bonus because the company has made a mistake, especially if the mistake has only slightly inconvenienced them. They just want the compan y to acknowledge the mistake and apologize for it. According to a research by the Nottingham School of Economics, angry customers are more likely to forgive a company that issues an apology compared to one that offers financial compensation for an inconvenience.According to the research, 45% of customers who received an apology for a delay in delivery withdrew their negative review of the company, compared to only 23% of customers who were offered financial compensation. Therefore, before you pull out your checkbook in an attempt to appease an angry customer, try giving them a simple âsorry for the mistake.â Not only is it more effective, it is also a lot cheaper.MAKE THE CUSTOMER FEEL HEARDAnother great way to calm down an angry customer is to make them feel heard and understood. An angry customer is already in a highly emotional state. Regardless of the reason behind their anger, they believe that they have been wronged and that their concerns are valid.By complaining to you, t hey not only want you to solve the problem, but also to understand the pain and frustration you have put them through. If you rush to solve the problem, they might feel that their pain and frustration is being ignored, which might make even more upset. Therefore, before you start proposing solutions, you need to make the customer feel heard and understood. To make the customer feel heard and understood, you will need to use your best listening skills. Since the customer probably wants to vent, you should give them the time to rant. Be patient and hear them out.Even if they say something that does not add up, resist the urge to interrupt them. Like pouring gasoline on a raging fire, interrupting an angry customer will only make them madder. At the same time, you donât want the customer to feel like they are talking to themselves, especially when they are complaining on phone where they canât see you. As they talk, encourage them with verbal prompts to show that you are still listeni ng. Use words such as âokay,â âuh huh,â and âoh, I see.âThis gives them the assurance that you are paying attention to what they are saying and makes them feel like you want to know the whole story.Once they are done venting, you need to make it clear to the customer that you have actually heard and understood their concerns. Show the customer that were justified in raising their concerns. You can do this through reassuring statements, such as,âI can certainly understand why you are upset,â or âcalling us was the right thing to do.âAnother way to show the customer that you were paying attention is to repeat the problem back to the customer. As you do this, you need to acknowledge not only the facts of the situation, but also how they made the customer feel. For instance, you might say,âI know it must have been frustrating and inconveniencing for you not to receive the product when you were expecting it.âIf something about their complaint feels a little unclea r, ask questions to make sure you fully understand their complaint. Once the customer realizes that you actually care about their problem and how it made them feel, they are more likely to calm down and give you the space to come up with a solution for their problem. In addition to helping them calm down, listening to an angry customer can also be beneficial to your business. First, listening to an angry customer provides you with an opportunity to learn something valuable from the customer. Angry people are some of the most honest people you will ever come across. An angry customer does not care about your feelings, which means that they will tell you things as they are.Instead of treating their rant as a nuisance, think of it as valuable customer feedback. Their complaint might help you discover an element of your product that you overlooked or internal processes that need to be fixed. This provides you with opportunities to make improvements, which is something every business shou ld be doing. In addition, acknowledging and implementing something suggested by a customer will make the customer feel valued and can even turn them into a loyal devotee of your brand.Secondly, listening to an angry customer might also provide you with a chance to teach something valuable to the customer. As you listen to the customerâs rant and ask questions to further understand their problem, you might realize that the functionality they are complaining about is actually available elsewhere in your product, or that they have a misconception about your product. This makes it easier for you to solve their problem and convert them into a loyal customer. This might also help you realize that you have been positioning your product incorrectly, thus giving you an opportunity to re-strategize your product positioning and attract even more customers.WRAPPING UPIf you work in a customer-facing role, it is inevitable that you will have to deal with an angry customer at some point. Titration Test Instructions for Homemade Biodiesel
One hundred percent virgin or lightly used waste vegetable oil (WVO) requires 3.5 grams of lye per liter of oil to cause a biodiesel reaction. Heavily used oil can require significantly more and must be tested to evaluate its acidity. Titration is a common method used to determine the appropriate amount of lye (base) needed for a particular batch of WVO. How to Perform a Titration Test Equipment Needed an electronic scale or beam balance2 beakers or jarsa graduated dropperlitmus test strips or electronic pH meterlyeisopropyl alcoholdistilled water Steps to Complete a Titration Test Measure 1 gram of lye on a scale.Measure 1 liter of distilled water into a beaker.Thoroughly mix the gram of lye with the liter of water until itââ¬â¢s dissolved.Measure 10 milliliters of isopropyl alcohol into a separate beaker.Thoroughly mix 1 milliliter of used vegetable oil into the alcohol. With a graduated eyedropper, put a 1-milliliter drop of the lye/water mix into the oil/alcohol mix.Immediately check the pH level of the oil/alcohol mix with a piece of litmus paper or an electronic pH meter.Repeat step 7, keeping track of the number of drops used, until the oil/alcohol mix has reached a pH level of between 8 and 9--normally no more than 4 drops.Calculate the amount of lye needed for the biodiesel reaction by adding 3.5 (amount of lye used for virgin oil) to the number of drops from step 7. Zechariah Is The Doctrine Of End Times - 1213 Words
One of the major themes of the book of Zechariah is Old Testament Eschatology. Eschatology is the doctrine of end times, or the study of last things. The first section, chapters 1-8, is considered apocalyptic and is filled with eight visions succeeding one another in one night. The second section, chapters 7-8, delivered two years later, are an answer to the question whether the days of fasting and mourning for the destruction of the city should be kept any longer, and an assurance to the people of God s presence and blessing. The third and final section, chapters 9-14, consists of two oracles. The first oracle (9-11) addresses God s dealings with His people. The second oracle (12ââ¬â14) points out the final conflict and triumph of God s kingdom. In the first section, Zechariah details a series of eight supernatural visions the Lord reveals to Him. These visions are apocalyptic in nature and are communicated to encourage the people to finish rebuilding the Temple, which at that point was five months into reconstruction. Being Fat a Big Issue Daniel Gutierrez English 1430, Fall 2010, Section 02 Professor A. Hepner October 14th, 2010 Daniel Gutierrez A. Hepner ENG 1300-01 October 14th, 2010 Being Fat a Big Issue Being fat is one of the biggest issues lately. We will write a custom essay sample on Being Fat a Big Issue or any similar topic only for you Order Now Our society has created a stereotype of how people should look and it is not exactly a fat boy/girl. People who are fat have suffered every day for how they look and many times our society ignores fat peopleââ¬â¢s feelings. Obese people have been suffering depression and discrimination for being fat, even though sometimes it is a disease or compulsive eating (eating disorder) that makes them fat, there are also some irresponsible cases of eating unhealthily and it not working out. Obese people today tend to be discriminated for being fat in our society. Overweight people are not different to us; they are people like you and me, for that reason we should not judge them. They are part of our society and they deserve respect and understanding. Ms. Claudia Gomez said, ââ¬Å"It is hard for us when I take the bus and everybody looking us like if we are different or if we are funny, they donââ¬â¢t know how painful it is. â⬠In addition, there are some studies to show that depression can be responsible for overweight especially in women (Overweight and Depression). Moreover, some obese people have eating disorder like compulsive overeating. Compulsive overeating is an addiction to food in big quantities. People suffering compulsive overeating used to eat to hide their emotions, to avoid what they feel inside or their life problems. As Susie Orbach said in her essay, Fat as a Feminist Issue, ââ¬Å"Women suffering from the problem of compulsive eating endure double anguish: feeling out of step with the rest of society, and believing that it is all their own faultâ⬠¦. (201)â⬠Overweight people have a disease which means people having extra body weight from muscle, bone and fat (What are Overweight and Obesity). There are some options to lose weight such as: surgery, diets by a nutritionist, exercise and some medicines. According to Medline Plus one of the common options for very obese people is the Gastric by Pass Surgery. After this surgery the patients will not be capable of eating like they ate before. This is an alternative to lose weight faster but also the patients have to follow a diet and do exercise (Gastric Bypass Surgery). Furthermore, obese people have not been practicing healthy habits. The most common unhealthy habits among overweight people are: they do not do exercise, they eat too frequently, usually eat more than one time at the same meal, they stay away from lightest activities (like use the stairs or walk a little), and they eat when they are not truly hungry (Frisch). Likewise, overweight people might be more responsible. Everybody knows what we can do or what we canââ¬â¢t. If I know that Iââ¬â¢m gaining weight, I also know that I have to take care of what I eat and do exercise. But many obese people know that they are fat and they still eat unhealthy food and also they do not do exercise. I think this is happening because we like to blame the circumstances (depression, divorce, childhood, etc). But at the same time they also know that being overweight may not be their fault but they are responsible to remain so, because what we do is our choice. Even though there are many advertisements that encourage us to eat unhealthy, nobody is forcing us to eat that food. Also you are the only one who can make the simple decision of taking the elevator or go up stairs. Being obese or overweight is an irresponsible act that makes people sick and this affects everybody because this is a public health problem that should not be. In his essay, What You Eat Is Your Business, Radley Balko maintains that, ââ¬Å"the best way to alleviate the obesity ââ¬Å"public healthâ⬠crisis is to remove obesity from the realm of public health (157). As he said, here some people would probably say that people should be responsible with their own health because we are the only ones who make the choice of living healthy or not. On the other hand, some fat people are proud of how they are. Mr. Alvarado who is weighting around 310 pounds describes himself as a big man and he said, ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t feel bad because Iââ¬â¢m fat, I am happy how I am, a big man. Iââ¬â¢m comfortable with my weight, I am healthy and I donââ¬â¢t want to change because the society says that people should be thin. In my opinion, over the years and following the bad habits that he has, I am not sure if he is going to be healthy. He maybe is proud of how he is but if he does not start to eat healthy and do exercise, he is going to see the consequences in a few years. In conclusion, being obese or overweight is an issue but it is also a disease. Although, it is unhealthy and unsightly, the hardest is some of them feel like they cannot fit in our society. In my opinion, we should not judge them; we should help them to make the correct decision to have a healthy life and also we have to change the stereotype that the society has showed us. Also, I used to think all obese people were unhappy to be fat. But my recent researches show me that some obese people simply do not care what people say about them and they are happy how they are. What aspects of responsibility are apparent in the Short play An inspector Calls Essay Example For Students
What aspects of responsibility are apparent in the Short play An inspector Calls Essay This short statement made by the inspector after his primary investigation has taken place is one of the main underlying themes throughout this short play. Perhaps because of agendas that the author J. B. Priestly wants to address. English author J. B. Priestley (1894-1984) clearly saw this 20th-century conundrum when he observed that ours is an age of deepening inner despair and of appalling catastrophes, an age when society says one thing and then does something entirely different . . . Western man is schizophrenic. Thus, he is confused that the societys that we live in are schizophrenic. Most people have two sides to them, one that believes they are good and just and the other true side which is selfish and cruel to others. How indeed are we an advanced and civilised society when we treat others like we do. This is perhaps why he chose this as his main theme for his play. It becomes apparent as the play progresses and we discover that everything the characters do or have done, no matter how small or insignificant it seems at the time ends up having an effect on others. On this occasion, whether by chance or not they happen to affect the same person. We will write a custom essay on What aspects of responsibility are apparent in the Short play An inspector Calls specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Each character except the inspector have at some time carelessly and without a passing thought have turned their backs on common humane responsibilities that should be shown to their fellow man such as kindness and compassion. These maltreatments of their responsibilities happened for a variety of reasons that become apparent as the play progresses. Often because of factors of life in Britain in the 1910s. The gaps in the social and class structures were vast, things we take for granted such as basic equality were often not apparent in society. These too are addressed in the play the Birlings being upper class and Eva Smith/Daisy Renton being lower class. This main theme of responsibility appears throughout the play, affecting every character, including the Inspector and Daisy Renton. It becomes apparent in five ways:past responsibilities that have been ignored, responsibility to family to help them, lack of responsibility towards others, relying on others to be responsible for you and the responsibility to aid and others and uncover truths. Throughout the play Priestly offers various examples of lack of responsibilities shown by us to our fellow humans in the past that could have easily been averted had we followed this simple lesson presented by the inspector. In the first act (act1 page 7) Mr. Birling demonstrates the feelings felt by many men in his position at the time. Immersed in what they considered then to be a brilliantly punctual and well working society. He demonstrates the blind inability to see outside the box and develop a perspective that is able to see what could (and does) go wrong. When discussing the Titanic is lead to believe what others have lead him to believe. Unsinkable. Clearly not the case. Although this doesnt directly affect what happens in the play it is an exaple made by Priestly of attitudes by all at the time. The authour in this case picking up on many Historical events that occur just after the play that have to do with lack of responsibility towards others in the past. i. e The Titanics Captain jeopardised the safety of the passengers by travelling through iceberg filled waters at such speeds. Then the designers had swapped lifeboats for more deckspace so there wasnt enough room for all and then the upper classes refused to share their boats with the lower classes. Thus causing many to die in the icy waters. He also mentions the war which could have been averted had certain events betraying responsibilities to the sanctity of human life occured on mainland Europe. Apart from Historical events that could have been averted through responsibility Priestly also confronts issues such as sexism by making it apparent in this play. In the1940s, where women had more rights and freedom than ever before, Priestley is trying to show that society can change, and becomes all the better for it, given that people show eachother responsibilities. Sheila: Whats this all about? Birling: Nothing to do with you Sheila, run along. (Act One, page 17). Birling: I protest against the way in which my daughter, a young, unmarried girl, is being dragged into this Inspector: (sharply)Your daughter isnt living on the moon. Shes here in Brumley too. (Act Two, page 37). Eric: Well, Im old enough to be married, arent I, and Im not married, and I hate these fat old tarts round the town (Act Three, page 52). Inspector: But she became your mistress? Gerald: Yes, I suppose it was inevitable. (Act Two, page 37). This factor of sexism in the 1910s was able to be presented to a 1940s audience and today as sexism has been almost abolished in some areas and even reversed in others the blatant sexism of the play is even more alien to us. As I mentioned before there was a huge gap between the classes is societies in the 1910s. .uc8791de6fc58969da82e2903bc6a1740 , .uc8791de6fc58969da82e2903bc6a1740 .postImageUrl , .uc8791de6fc58969da82e2903bc6a1740 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uc8791de6fc58969da82e2903bc6a1740 , .uc8791de6fc58969da82e2903bc6a1740:hover , .uc8791de6fc58969da82e2903bc6a1740:visited , .uc8791de6fc58969da82e2903bc6a1740:active { border:0!important; } .uc8791de6fc58969da82e2903bc6a1740 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uc8791de6fc58969da82e2903bc6a1740 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uc8791de6fc58969da82e2903bc6a1740:active , .uc8791de6fc58969da82e2903bc6a1740:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uc8791de6fc58969da82e2903bc6a1740 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uc8791de6fc58969da82e2903bc6a1740 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uc8791de6fc58969da82e2903bc6a1740 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uc8791de6fc58969da82e2903bc6a1740 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uc8791de6fc58969da82e2903bc6a1740:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uc8791de6fc58969da82e2903bc6a1740 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uc8791de6fc58969da82e2903bc6a1740 .uc8791de6fc58969da82e2903bc6a1740-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uc8791de6fc58969da82e2903bc6a1740:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Romeo and Juliet Coursework Example EssayPriestly also concentrates on these in the play. There are examples of these throughout the play. For example, when Eric and Gerald are being questioned about their exploits in the Palace Bar and their involvement with women of the town. Both the men speak of the women and men there cruelly as they are lower classes. Hard-eyed, dough-faced women. Another aspect of responsibility towards others in this play is the responsibility towards other family mambers shown. As the play begins in the Birling household the four Birlings, Sheila, Eric, Mr. +Mrs. Birling are present, along with Sheilas fiance Gerald Croft. Quickly the scene is set and the characters characters presented to the audience. The theme of responsibility for self gain is quickly introduced when we discover the relationship between the Crofts and the Birlings goes far beyond the simple virtue of love. We understannd that the engaged couples fathers work is closely related and many obviously apparent hints by Mr. Birling about how the marriage will benefit both himself and Geralds fathers businesses. Youre just the kind of son in law I wanted. Your father and I have been friendly rivals in business for some time now- though crofts limited are both older and bigger than Birling and company- and now youve brought us together. Sheila knows that this is her future, and the men arent even attempting to be subtle about the fact that the familes relationships are as important as hers. This is an exaple of Sheilas responsibility to her family. They feel they must protect eachother. Another example is when Gerald is detailing his affair Mrs. B feels the responsibility to protect Sheila. It would be much better if Sheila didnt listen to this story at all. (act2 p. 34) The main theme of the play is the Lack of responsibility shown to the young girl Eva Smith/Daisy Renton. The main story of the play is Inspector Goole (ghoul? ) who is representing the perfect and just individual that is not in keeping with the character of a police inspector of the time, interrogating the Birling Family about their involvement with Eva Smiths suicide. He does this by making them admit what they have done so as to not be responsible to her. He does this by slowly feeding them information and letting them fill in gaps. In total the Birling family as a whole are responsible for her downward spiral that ends up with her taking her own life and the life of her unborn child. Over a period of time all of them are cruel and unfair to her in a variety of ways, some more cruelly than others but with just as much affect. The inspector chooses to investigate the Birlings and their responsibilities chronologically, starting with her being fired from Arthur Birlings factory two years before she commits suicide. Mr. Birling begins by commenting on how nice a a girl she was a lively good looking girl a good worker too. Then we are told for what reason she was fired. Just because she asked for a pay rise, and a small one at that. Just because she was considered one of the ringleaders. If she was such a good worker surely he could have just said no as he did to the other workers. Instead turning her out on the streets, and after working well for him for over a year. He didnt even give her a second chance, an obvious lack of responsibility. This time being cruel and showing no responsibility because he cared for nothing but money and profit. He sees the girls as cheap labour. The factories and warehouses wouldnt know where to get cheap labour- ask your father (act1 p. 18) Maybe even because of the obvious sexism at the time that I commented on earlier. Mr. Birling then shows a lack of responsibility towards others that is not related to Eva Smith. As he realises he may be in trouble he tries to blame it on anybody he can to relieve himself. As it becomes apparent that everybody is to blame he does nothing to help them. He just sides with the inspector. Often offering up pretences that his questioning methods are unsuitable but obviously relieved that he isnt solely to blame. He acts big, as if head of the family but is cowardly when they need his protection. Next the inspector questions Sheila. Linking her with Eva/Daisys expulsion from the clothes shop Millwards mere months after losing her previous job at Mr. Bs factory. After also commenting on how pretty she was Sheila describes trying on a fabulous dress thet when on didnt suit her at all. She became angry when Eva/Daisy held up the dress as if wearing it. And it just suited her. .u03026824c53a4ef8925939fd091a3d6a , .u03026824c53a4ef8925939fd091a3d6a .postImageUrl , .u03026824c53a4ef8925939fd091a3d6a .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u03026824c53a4ef8925939fd091a3d6a , .u03026824c53a4ef8925939fd091a3d6a:hover , .u03026824c53a4ef8925939fd091a3d6a:visited , .u03026824c53a4ef8925939fd091a3d6a:active { border:0!important; } .u03026824c53a4ef8925939fd091a3d6a .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u03026824c53a4ef8925939fd091a3d6a { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u03026824c53a4ef8925939fd091a3d6a:active , .u03026824c53a4ef8925939fd091a3d6a:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u03026824c53a4ef8925939fd091a3d6a .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u03026824c53a4ef8925939fd091a3d6a .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u03026824c53a4ef8925939fd091a3d6a .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u03026824c53a4ef8925939fd091a3d6a .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u03026824c53a4ef8925939fd091a3d6a:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u03026824c53a4ef8925939fd091a3d6a .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u03026824c53a4ef8925939fd091a3d6a .u03026824c53a4ef8925939fd091a3d6a-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u03026824c53a4ef8925939fd091a3d6a:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The play Hamlet was written by Shakespeare EssayThen when Sheila saw her laughing when she tried he dress on and it didnt suit her she told the manager if you dont get rid of her, id never go there again. The management felt it neccesary to let her go, though they didnt want to. This is a sign of extreme cruelty shown to Eva/Daisy by Sheila and a lack of responsibility by leaving her with no work. This is solely because of the jealousy felt by her because of her spoiled attitude. This is also a sort of lack of responsibility shown by the shop Millwards who kick her out just because of wanting profit and their unwillingness to argue and refuse Sheilas request. Sheila is als o showing lack of responsibility because she says that she didnt give it a second thought, even when she had calmed down. To her defence Sheila shows a change of character throughout the rest of the play, becoming highly sympathetic towards the fate that Eva/Daisy has suffered. Mr. B:And you can pay back that money that you stole. Sheila:But that wont bring Eva Smith back to life will it? (Act3 p. 65) The Inspector moves on to Gerald and Eric. Both of whom have mistreated her Very badly in the past. Using and Abusing her. Both meet up with the same desperate young woman in the Palace Bar and taking advantage of her position. After losing two jobs the hardships of life are beginning to take their toll on her. Now a woman of the town. Both take advantage of her and casting aside genuine responsibilities to help a fellow human being, instead taking advantage and using her as a mistress. Both however do show some responsibility when they come to helping her through her hard times. Gerald gives her a place to stay and Eric money. Although neither present responsibility in any great amount that shows they care for her. Eric steals money and Gerald dumping her when he deems neccesary. The factors that have lead to this behaviour could be many, such as male arrogance or maliciousness. Mrs. Birlings part in the events that lead to Evas suicide take place in the close proximity to the inspector calling, maybe even within a matter of days. Nrs. Birling is perhaps the one that demonstrates the least responsibility out of all the Birlings and Gerald. She shows malice and spite towards this young and OBVIOUSLY pregnant young lady. Eva approaches Mrs. Bs charity council begging for money, just so she can survive. She no longer has food, money or anywhere to stay. Now she also finds herself eating for two. After being asked for her name she answered Mrs. Birling, not knowing who the woman in front of her was. This is the sole reason presented by mrs. B as to why her case was thrown out and aid refused. Naturally that was one of the things that prejudiced me against her case. This is an example of an immature woman who cannot get past her own existance to realise the importance of helping someone else. Perhaps even worse still is when she denies that she was wrong for refusing her aid, saying it was the fathers fault. Turning away a pregnant woman in her situation is unforgivable in any situation, especially when its for such weak reasons as a title. The entire family was is some part to blame for Eva Smiths suicide, but none save Sheila were able to admit wrong doing. Despite the Ghoul inspector visiting who was trying to save their souls and change them as people by admitting their lack of responsibilities none had changed as the real inspector was due to arrive. Perhaps another way for Priestly to demonstrate the thoughts and feelings of those at the time. Eva Smith relied on the responsibilities of the Birlings. All failed her. Another theme of responsibility in this play is that of the Inspector. He feels it neccesary to be responsible for uncovering the truth of why Eva Smith commits suicide. He feels it neccesary to complete his work justly and thoroughly, but most of all, to find the truth properly. Not bending his morales to the whims of a class-filled society. Its my duty to ask questions. This quote sums up what the inspector represents in the play. And also refers to my main question of morales and responsibility in this play.

Sudans civil War essays
Sudan's civil War essays Sudans current Darfur conflict did not begin arbitrarily and without reason. Instead, many underlying factors that have been fomenting and resulting in breakouts of violence are still at work in Sudan. The ethnical differences of the Arab Muslim ruling majority and the African and primarily animistic inhabitants of the southern state of Darfur have caused Sudan to have been mired in a nearly constant state of civil war since 1955. The application of Islamic law to all citizens has always been the sparkplug that more than anything else caused the non-Muslim population in Sudan to feel the need to rebel. The effects of the civil wars and more importantly, the most recent conflict in Darfur, are massive, and the death tolls, especially of Africans, are so immense that this conflict is being labeled as genocide. To understand the conflict that is ongoing currently in Sudan it is necessary to understand the history and how Sudan has been a state of comprised mostly of Arabs since olden times. In 642 A.D., ten years after the prophet Mohammeds death an Arab army invaded Nubia, in present-day Sudan Later in the 1820s Egypts Muslim rulers conquered Sudan and enslaved 2 million Africans by the end of the 19th century (Anderson 64). The enslavers were mostly Muslims from the Ottoman Empire, yet Sudanese Muslims also took part in the slavery. In the 1880s the Ansar, a Muslim group from the Kordofan province took over control of a new Islamic Sudanese state through the leadership of Mahdi, the rightly guided one. After expulsing Turco-Egyptian troops and killing General Charles Gordon, the viceroy from Britain via Egypt, Mahdi took up a campaign of spreading Islam throughout all of Sudan (Anderson 65). However, before the Ansar could take over what is now present day Sudan, Britai n took over control of all of this area. Britains policy was one of promoting Christianity and Eng...

Strong and Weak Vowels in Spanish
Strong and Weak Vowels in Spanish Vowels in Spanish are classified as either weak or strong, and the classification determines when combinations of two or more vowels are considered to form a separate syllable. Key Takeaways: Spanish Vowels The strong vowels of Spanish are a, e, and o; the weak vowels are i and u.When two strong vowels are next to each other, they form separate syllables; in other combinations, the vowels are in the same syllable. Two vowels next to each other form a diphthong; three vowels next to each other form a triphthong. Two Types of Vowels The strong vowels of Spanish - sometimes known as open vowels- are a, e, and o. The weak vowels - sometimes known as closed vowels or semivowels- are i and u. Y often serves as a weak vowel as well, functioning in the same way and sounding the same as i. The basic rule of vowel combinations and syllables is that two strong vowels cannot be in the same syllable, so that when two strong vowels are next to each other, they are considered to belong to separate syllables. But other combinations - such as a strong and a weak vowel or two weak vowels - form a single syllable. Be aware that in real life, especially in rapid speech, two strong vowels, such as in the words maestro and Oaxaca, often slide together to be pronounced in a way that may sound like a single syllable or very close to it. But they are still considered separate syllables for writing purposes, such as when dividing words at the end of a line or for the use of accent marks. Keep in mind that vowel sounds in Spanish tend to be purer than they are in English. In English, for example, the word boa (a type of snake) often sounds something like boh-wah, while in Spanish boa sounds more like boh-ah. This is because English speakers often pronounce the long o with a slight ooh sound at the end, while Spanish speakers do not. Diphthongs When a strong and a weak vowel or two weak vowels combine to form a single syllable, they form a diphthong. An example of a diphthong is the ai combination in baile (dance). The ai combination here sounds much like the English word eye. Another example is the ui combination in fui, which to the English speaker sounds much like fwee. Here are some fairly common words that include diphthongs (shown in boldface): puerto (port), tierra (earth), siete (seven), hay (there is or there are), cuida (care), ciudad (city), labio (lip), hacia (toward), paisano (peasant), cancià ³n (song), Europa (Europe), aire (air). In some words, a strong and weak vowel or two weak vowels dont merge together but instead form separate syllables. In those cases, a written accent over the weak vowel is used to show the distinction. A common example is the name Marà a. Without the accent mark, the name would be pronounced much like MAHR-yah. In effect, the accent mark turns the i into a strong vowel. Other words where an accent mark is used to keep a weak vowel from becoming part of a diphthong include rà o (river), heroà na (heroine), dà ºo (duet) and paà s (country). If there is an accent over the strong vowel, it doesnt destroy the diphthong. For example, in adià ³s, the accent merely indicates where the spoken stress goes but doesnt affect how the vowels work together. Triphthongs Occasionally, a diphthong can combine with a third vowel to form a triphthong. Triphthongs never have two strong vowels in them; they are formed by either three weak vowels or a strong vowel with two weak vowels. Words that have triphthongs include Uruguay (Uruguay), estudiis (you study) and buey (ox). Note that for purposes of the written accent, the y is considered a consonant even if it is functioning as a vowel. Thus the final syllable of Uruguay is what gets the stress; thats where the stress goes on words ending in a consonant other than n or s. If the final letter were an i, the word would need to be spelled Urugui to maintain the pronunciation.

Joseph Plumb Martin Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Joseph Plumb Martin - Essay Example Wit and humor are great assets for a writer. Martin describes about the confusing situations that prevailed in the uncertain battlegrounds. Without able officers to guide, issue orders to the soldiers as to the course of action to be followed everything was in a state of mess in the war-fronts. The soldiers were ill-equipped, untrained and faced life-and death situations often. Most of them were inexperienced and did not possess the skills and intricacies of attacking and defending in warfronts. Martinââ¬â¢s grouse that the authorities did not care for the ordinary soldier is genuine. They defended the people and the cause, and once the war was over they were finding it difficult to defend their poor pensions. This observation of Martin is bone chilling: ââ¬Å"If I chance to die in a civilized country, none will deny me that. A dead body never begs a grave; thanks for that.â⬠(p.179, 180). Martin and fellow-soldiers fought wars with utter dedication in sub-human conditions. Their patriotism was matchless. Martin felt genuine anguish the way the soldiers were treated by the authorities, once the job was done. His language is not that of a bitter critic. His simple words pierce the conscience of a discernable reader, like a sharp dagger. Revolutionary speeches were delivered by the big leaders, theoreticians on the subject of racism, and other think-tanks from the ivory towers. But the real difficulties of the war was borne by the ordinary soldiers, and the goal of freedom for the Nation was accomplished by them fighting from the deadly trenches, with genuine apprehensions about their survival to see the sun rise for another day.

Concept of criminal punishment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Concept of criminal punishment - Essay Example The English were notorious for their use of corporal punishment and their penchant for this form of punishment proliferated in their iniquitous colonies (Punishment ). The American colonies witnessed such abnormal cruelty at the hands of the English masters, and a semblance of civilized behavior was established after the advent of independence. Gradually, corporal punishment was rooted out of the American penal system, and the extant penal system has no room for such iniquitous measures (Punishment ). From the dawn of civilization, societies have implemented a wide array of punishments to deter crime. Initially and even today in some of the Islamic countries, the lex talionis or the law of equal retaliation used to hold sway. In this form of punishment the retribution is akin to the crime committed. For instance, in some Islamic countries, a thiefââ¬â¢s hand is amputated. This is termed as the law of hudÃ
«d. An improvement over these barbaric customs was the exaction of money from the perpetrators of crime. This was predominant in England from the 5th to the 15th century. Such money was required to be paid as compensation for theft, personal injury and death (Champion, 2007). The American penal system is characterized by a high rate of incarceration. This is on account of the proliferation of crime and the resolve of the authorities to enhance the number of compulsory sentences. The discretionary powers of the judiciary have been curtailed, since the 1980ââ¬â¢s with the consequence that the length of sentences increased from 39 to 54 months. This measure has been hailed as a grand success, because there was a substantial decrease in the crime rate. However, of late, the crime rate has displayed an increase. This has been attributed to the absence of a properly implemented rehabilitation program for convicts, and the proclivity of the authorities to imprison people with

Mountain Dew S Bad Cheetah Commercial Media Essay
Mountain Dew S Bad Cheetah Commercial Media Essay This is a campaign that has confined itself to barely three commercials. The common thing in all these commercials is the group of boys out on a safari. They are generally roaming about shouting à Do the Dew! The commercial shows a cheetah running in all its gusto, and one of our models following it on a bicycle. Finally, the lad jumps on the cheetah and traps him. Then he puts his hand inside the cheetahs mouthstraight down to his stomach, and pulls out a can of Mountain Dew. Bad Cheetahà he says. The other guys watching him say to each other Cheetah bhi peeta hain!à Then they show the cheetah with all the spots gone except for a few spots which spell out à Do the Dew. The commercial fails to follow some vital rules of advertising. There is absolutely no brand positioning. Which bracket of people is it targeting? What benefit is it givingà you? Secondly, their models seem possessed, running around jungles with colourful clothes, jumping on cheetahs and shouting at the top of their voices. The viewer shave no point of reference to identify themselves with either the product or the advertising tone. Thirdly, there is no advertising message at least nothing that makes any sense. Why would anyone want to drink something that a Cheetah allegedly drinks? How did the Cheetah get hold of the can of Mountain Dew in the first place? In fact, this advertisement has more environmental and wildlife ramifications than any connection with the product. Fourthly, it is a very paltry hand at humour. If the intention of the advertisers was to excite the audience and make them laugh, they have failed miserably. This advertisement has induced to people only to switch channels because of its senseless advertising message, theme and conception. Fifthly and most importantly, the advertisement says nothing at all about the drink, except, of course, to extol its endearing quality it to Cheetahs. What is the taste? Does it quench your thirst? Does it make you feel cool? Is it refreshing? If this advertisement is remembered at all, it is remembered for all the wrong reasons. From the very beginning of the Mountain Dews ad campaign, it has come under some very serious firing. When they launched their first ad featuring the infamous slogan Do the Dew, other aerated drink manufacturers immediately saw its potential by piggybacking on the fame and releasing a parody. The parody achieved what the original never did. Today, viewers instantly relate this slogan to No do here, go doà jhaadi ke peeche. The Mountain Dew advertisement failed at the ad mantra AIDA. Although it did catch the attention of the viewer the first time it was aired. It did not generate any interest or desire. It crashed so bad that not only was the ad campaign scrapped, sowas the product. Even if bottles of Mountain Dew line the shelves of stores today, itssales barely make a dent in the profits of the company. Advertisement 2 Kinetic Blaze Introductory Advertisement The Blaze is part of Kinetics Italiano series of scooters, comprises seven bestselling true-blue European scooter designs that Kinetic bought from Italian manufacturer Italjet. With its aggressive and glamorous Italian design, generous proportions and majestic presence, the very special Blaze makes an instant celebrity of its rider. The high-spec Blaze also has ample go to match the show with a powerful 165cc, 4valve engine that pumps out 11.6 bhp, coupled with automatic transmission. Kinetic Blaze was launched in 2006. The following is an analysis of the introductory advertisement. In this advertisement, a group of girls are seen going crazy in front of a house. A guy seeing the crowd of girls asks a nearby shopkeeper if Abhishek or John were around. The shopkeeper says it is Rohit Verma. He has Kinetics latest scooter and this is the source of all the commotion. This advertisement is clearly targeted towards the youth. Not only are the models used in the age group of 20-30, the entire look and feel of the advertisement is young and hep. This commercial scores on some points while it fails at others. First of all, the advertisement develops attention and generates interest. Viewers are kept in the dark as to the source of the commotion. Interest is heightened when the shopkeeper answers in the negative to the names of celebrities. When the name Rohit Verma is mentioned, viewers are all ears (and eyes) to find out more aboutà him. The presentation of the product, in this case the scooter, is also well done. It looks glamorous, and the difference in size and shape are also highlighted without words, heightening the impact. The product and the brand are not lost in the advertisement, and viewers not only identify the product, but also remember it. Its market targeting and brand positioning are clearly defined. The target is the middle income male youth. It is positioned as a scooter for men and the first in ushering in a new market segment for scooters with its innovative design and targetà market. However, the advertisement itself fails to generate a desire for more information or for purchase. This desire is evoked by the fact that the scooter is new and innovative. If the same advertisement was broadcast for a scooter that had already been launched in the market, it would not have done well. So, in a way, this advertisement works for the product since it is new, but considered solely from the advertising point of view, it does not make a big impact. The advertisement also fails to answer some of the basic questions that consumer shave while watching the commercial. What sets this scooter apart from the other scooters in the market? It is obvious that the look and feel of the scooter is definitely innovative. However, all new products sport a new appearance, in fact, it is imperative that they do so. So in terms of performance, how does it differ? What is its USP? Why should the consumer choose to buy this product, when he can be sure of the performance of tried-and-tested scooters? From the advertising point of view, the commercial lacks originality and creativity. Showing a crowd of screaming girls to enhance the psychological value of a product is not new. Many advertisements for motorbikes, furniture, cars etc., showcase models to give the product an oomph factor and increase its appeal. Also, from a logical standpoint, why would the girls favour a guy based only on the fact that he has this scooter? How does it award him star status? The advertising message is vague and unappealing. It is understood that the product is being positioned as your Shortcut To Fame. But, how? Most motorbike advertisements try to project their product as one that will give the owner an edge with the ladies. The advertisement says much, but tells little. Advertisement 6 Surf Excels Advertisement (Brother Sister Duo) Hindustan Unilever Limited introduced Surf in 1959, introducing the first detergent powder into the country. At the time, housewives used laundry soap bars to wash clothes. Surf offered them significantly better clean, with much less effort. The promise of superlative whiteness the articulation of a great clean at the time, connected with consumers and helped to establish the brand. Surf was the first national detergent brand on TV; the brand used TV to effectively educate their consumers on how to use detergent powders in a bucket for a betterà wash. Surf Excel made a big splash with their Daag Achhe Hain advertising campaign. The following is an analysis of the first such commercial. The advertisement features a brother and sister duo walking home from school, when the little girl falls into a puddle of mud. Crying, she looks to her brother for help. Her brother gets an idea and starts beating up the puddle of mud, demanding an apology. After a time and a lot of mud on his uniform, he stands up and says, Sorry bola. The narrator then removes all apprehensions of dirt and stains and says,Daag Acche Hain. This advertisement is universally well-loved. This is so because it does a lot of things right. It makes use of childrens appeal to get the advertising message across. The advertisement does what seldom others do cater to the emotions and sentiments of the viewers and succeeds with it. Not only do the children lower your guard to the advertisement, but the story, too, warms the heart of the viewers. The advertisement generates a sense of bonding. Viewers without siblings, too, can relate to the advertisement and the actions of the little boy. The advertisement also exudes certain warmth that reflects itself in the viewers. The advertising mantra, AIDA, is strictly adhered to. This is one of the reasons for its success. By showing a little boy and girl, the advertisement draws the attention of the viewers. When the little girl falls into the puddle and starts to cry, it creates interest in the minds of the viewers. When the tagline is spouted, it builds, in the viewers, a desire to know more. This desire often leads to action. Although there is no obvious targeting, it is done so through indirect means. Most mothers are concerned when their children come home in dirty and messy clothes. This advertisement, not only sends out the message that Surf Excel will help you was them out, but that also there is no need to fear stains. Although the advertisement does not centre on the product or brand, both are remembered. The product and brand are subtly introduced to the viewers such that it sub-consciously enters their minds without any jarring highlights on the product orà brand. This advertisement also does what the majority do not. It focuses on the people rather than the product. The sentiments, actions and emotions of the people are highlighted and showcased throughout the advertisement in one form or another. The product is kept discreetly tucked away and does not overpower the commercial. Although Surf Excel is a premium brand, this advertisement caters to all the income grades and all classes of people, across age groups. The brand and product are positioned as accessible to all people, whoever and however they may be. The brand image created through this advertisement is phenomenal. The advertisement leaves people with a warm feeling. This feeling also transfers to the product and brand. Thus, this advertisement can definitely be called and advertising success. Advertisement 4 Orbit White Chewing Gum Cow Advertisement Orbit is one of the worlds largest selling chewing gum brand. In India, the brand shares the market leadership with Center Fresh brand. Orbit was launched in India in2004. This was Indias first Sugarfree chewing gum and together with Perfettis Happydent, this brand has rejuvenated the chewing gum segment in India. Orbit can be termed as a functional chewing gum. The brand when launched differentiated itself from the existing chewing gums with its sugar free property. Globally the Orbit brand adopts the tagline For a good clean feeling no matter what in India, Orbit uses for healthy teeth and prevents tooth decay as its main message. Orbit White launched their most popular advertising campaign with the Cow series. The following is an analysis of the first advertisement in this series. The advertisement showcases a mad animal specialist, Dr. Bhatawdekar, who speaks in Butler-English. He expounds the special quality of Orbit White Chewing Gum that whitens the teeth of a cow that previously had yellow teeth. His conclusion is that if it works for the cow, itll work for you too. This commercial tries its hand at humour in drawing attention and generating interest. It succeeds to quite an extent in this intention, but also fails at few places. The caricature of the doctor succeeds exceedingly well. Viewers immediately recall the product, the brand and the entire advertisement on any reference to Dr.à Bhatawdekar. The product and brand are duly highlighted. They are not lost during the telecast of the advertisement. The commercials message is wound around the product, making the product and brand as much a part of the advertisement as the rest of the characters and the concept. The advertisement also successfully plays to the sense of humour of the viewers. Any reference to the product results in immediate association to the doctor and his cow volunteer.à This gives viewers a light-hearted view of the product. Nonetheless, there have been instances where the sentiments of viewers have been hurt. In such cases, it seems that the concept that starts out as funny, turns out to be a gross miscalculation of the sense of humour of the viewers. The characterization of the doctor and the way he speaks in English can be construed as offensive by many viewers. Since the doctor is a deliberate attempt at making fun of bad grammar, viewers who are insecure of their oral abilities may find the advertisement offensive. Overall, the advertisement has no class. Viewers can be put off by the commercial on grounds that it displays no sophistication. The attempt at humour can be seen as tending towards slapstick comedy and a very poor attempt at that. However, the advertisement does not fail completely. The product and brand are imprinted in the minds of the consumer. Any reference to the product brings remembrance of the humorous advertisement. And consumers purchase the product, even if only out of a sense of absurdity. Advertisement 5 VISAs Pierce Brosnan Advertisement Visa Inc. operates the worlds largest retail electronic payments network and is one of the most recognized global financial services brands. Visa facilitates global commerce through the transfer of value and information among financial institutions, merchants, consumers, businesses and government entities. Visa gained the attention of television viewers in 2003 with a Tuk Tuk, featuring Pierce Brosnan in Bangkok. The following is an analysis of the advertisement. A limousine drives through the streets of Bangkok, only to be thwarted by a trafficjam. Pierce Brosnan winds down his window and catches the eye of a tuk tuk driver. The driver, delighted to have James Bond in the back seat, revs the engine and pullsa wheelie, beginning a stunt-filled and effects-laden ride through the alleyways, restaurants and shops of Bangkok. The tuk tuk arrives at the hotel just as Brosnans dining partner pulls up in a limousine. Zhang Ziyi steps out and apologise for being late. The tuk tuk collapses, totally exhausted by the trip across town. Brosnan reaches for his jacket pocket and throws his VISA card to the driver.à Later in the evening, the tuk tuk driver pulls up with a brand new tuk tuk, revving his engine and beckoning for Brosnan and Zhang Ziyi to join him. The tagline: Visa: All it takes. This advertisement can be considered a success. It does a lot of things right and gains not only the attention and interest of the viewers, but also builds a strong brand image and remembrance. The product is clear and highlighted. The brand, too, is not lost during the course of the advertisement. The product and brand is the core of the advertising message. Any attempt to analyze the commercial otherwise would prove fruitless. The advertisement retains a dashing air, quite literally. The commercial successfully draws on the sophisticated action of James Bond and highlights it exceedingly well in the tuk tuk mad-dash through the city. The advertisement stays true to the image of James Bond. The commercial maintains the charm of James Bond. It also includes a lot of stunts that can be immediately associated to James Bond. This succeeds in drawing the attention and generating interest among the viewers. The brand, VISA, is associated with sophistication and quality. With this advertisement, they reinforce this image and add to it a certain panache and active participation. If the advertisement comes under any criticism at all, it is from a purely logical standpoint. When Brosnan hands over his VISA card to the tuk tuk driver, the driver returns with a new and better powered tuk tuk. However, there are those who argue that anyone would have disappeared with the card and spent all the money. Nevertheless, for those who appreciate honesty, this advertisement succeeds. The commercial generates good feelings in the minds of the viewers. The product and brand are remembered. Additionally, the brand image is improved and remembered.

Scramble Africa And The Aftermath Essay - 2328 Words
Scrambling Africa and the Aftermath. One common phenomenon between many nations of the world is the colony. The United States, Canada, South Korea, Niger, India, Kenya, Australia, and the Republic of South Africa and more shared the pros and cons of colonial systems. They are all former colonies to the extent that India, Nigeria, South Africa, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand are members of the Commonwealth, they are former colonies of the United Kingdom and they all continue to concede the nominal leadership of the queen. Here we come to the limit of the commonality of the countries that we routinely put the stamp ââ¬Å"former colonies.â⬠Since the many countries that we often put under that rubric have traversed diverse trajectories both as colonies and former colonies, it is difficult to justify our thinking about them in their sameness, except nominally. Because whereas Canada, the United States, and Australia are obviously modern states with thriving economies built on intense industrialization (and South Korea, India, and the Republic of South Africa are not far behind), few will say that Nigeria or the rest of the former colonies in Africa either have thriving economies or can be judged modern states. What is more, although Canada, the United States, and Australia have thriving systems of rule of law as well as robust civil societies, in spite of the fact that many African countries are now ostensibly under representative democracies, few will deny that they are nowhereShow MoreRelatedSoci al And Economic Effects Of British Imperialism1544 Words à |à 7 Pagespopulation. Essay Autonomy Vs. Paternalism In Mental Health Treatment
Autonomy Vs. Paternalism In Mental Health Treatment The assignment for this Ethics class was to review Mr. Jacobs treatment, as described by the New York State Commission on Quality of Care for the Mentally disabled (1994). The class was further asked to comment on the major issues for each of the three perspectives. The agencies, family and review board were to be included. This student will begin with a fourth perspective; that of Mr. Gordon. In the Matter of Jacob Gordon (1994), is the story of the last eight years of a psychiatrically disabled mans life. Mr. Gordon appeared to vacillate between striving for autonomy and accepting the support of his family. Unfortunately, it appeared by this account that the families support wasâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦He continued to need her support and assistance although this met she continued to be overly involved in his life. It was his mother he turned to when he had problems with a roommate. It was his mother who was utilized when Mr. Gordon was less compliant. It was Mr. Gordons family who assured that he had continued mental health counseling and services. It was also Mr. Gordons family who appeared to be the focal point of any plans for Mr. Gordon. quot;......expectations, soon to be dashed by programs more devoted to servicing neurotic families than people with schizophreniaquot; (Rubenstien, 1994, p.55). Mr. Gordon remained safe and close to his family by relinquishing his autonomy. Mr. Gordons safety was the most important issue for the family.
